Scripture
“The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn’t have God’s Son doesn’t have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.”
1 John 5:11-13, World English Bible
Questions to talk about
Word for word
Mark: Honestly, I don't know if I'm even allowed to feel sure about God. How does anyone really know where they stand?
Sarah: I'm so glad you asked, because I've wondered that too. There's a short passage in 1 John about exactly this. Let me read it to you.
Scripture: The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn’t have God’s Son doesn’t have the life. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
Mark: Okay, that's pretty direct. But doesn't that sound a little bold? Who gets to say they're sure about something like that?
Sarah: Fair question. Just before it, the writer says we trust what people tell us all the time, and God's own testimony about his Son counts for even more.
Mark: So who's it actually written to? Because I'm not sure I'd call myself a believer. Some days I'm barely hanging on.
Sarah: It's written to people who've started trusting Jesus, even shakily. And Mark, I was lost too. I still fall short. For me it was never about being good enough.
Mark: That's kind of a relief. But I don't want anyone pushing me into anything, you know?
Sarah: No pressure, ever. You could just talk to God honestly, even something as simple as, God, I want to know you. And I'm here whenever you want to talk. I love you.
Sarah: If you're wondering where you stand, you're not too far gone. Tell God honestly what's on your heart. The door is open, and I'd love for you to follow along.
